Chapter Eight

Would she run now?

Luke insisted on tailing Mary home from the garage, half-convinced she was planning on running now that the mechanic had confirmed the tire had been slit.

Gut instinct told him he had better move quickly. He’d told Mary as they left the garage that she could expect him to stay as a guest on her couch until they figured out what was going on, but his adamant suggestion had not been warmly received.

He parked his car in the rutted driveway beside Abner’s cottage, checking his watch as he ran inside to grab a few personal belongings. He needed to call Vaughn in Ottawa. If he was lucky, he’d catch the homicide detective before he finished his shift for the day. He wanted verification of Rob Barrie’s criminal record immediately. He punched Vaughn’s number into his cell phone. Fortunately the homicide detective was still at his desk.

Luke briefed him on the details of the breaking and entering, and the stolen car that had been following him. Then he quickly recounted Mary’s tormented history with her ex.

“Christ, that’s evil,” Vaughn muttered. “Let’s run his name through the system and see if the bastard exists.” Luke heard the faint tapping of computer keys as Vaughn accessed the information on the Canadian Police Information Centre.

“Got him,” Vaughn said. “Looks pretty much like you just told me. Got a suspended sentence—three years’ probation—for the assault. And I see he’s not supposed to have any contact with a Shannon Mulligan. He did some time inside for the stalking and the violation of probation convictions.”

Luke’s soul plummeted to the depths of hell. Mary/Shannon, whoever she was, was still lying to him. She’d left out a key detail of her story—how she’d picked up an alias—particularly that alias.

“Hey, Calder,” Vaughn’s voice barked over the line. “You still with me?”

“Yeah.” Luke jerked his mind away from the leaden disappointment filling him.

“Good. Because Barrie’s probation expires next Wednesday, along with the No Communications Order. How’s that for a coincidence?”

“I don’t believe in coincidences,” Luke muttered. “He sounds like the type to bide his time, waiting for his probation to end so he can legally approach her.”

“I’ll get copies of the police reports for Barrie’s arrests and track down his probation officer. See if he can tell me Barrie’s current whereabouts.”

“Can you get me a photo of Shannon Mulligan so I can positively ID her? And Barrie’s mug shot? I want to know whether he was the one driving the stolen car.”

“Give me a day or two, and you can pick them up at the RCMP detachment. If the suspect turns out to be Shannon Mulligan, I’ll contact the security department of the Blossom Valley Bank about her attempt to defraud them. They’ll be relieved they denied her the loan, but they’ll want to charge her with Personation with Intent.”

Luke knew charges would have to be brought against her, but that didn’t make the thought of such a happening any more bearable. “Do me a favor. When you check in with Barrie’s probation officer, ask him to find out where Barrie was on St.
